Ultimate Easy Gift Guide

December holidays always seem to sneak up on you every year (while your wallet and waistline might still be recovering from Thanksgiving). The thing to look forward to most is getting awesome gifts from those who love you, while the opposite (shopping for things to give to other people to show your love) is kind of the worst.

I'm pretty serious about my gift giving game. Here are some

quick tips

Must be a little life-changing — The reason why no one wants something they already have or something they have no use for is because they just don't need it. Good gifts fit with someone's daily lifestyle, but great gifts make it a little better. Sometimes it's things we've always kind of wanted/needed, but could never remember to actually get.

Or consumable — One of the worst things in the world is seriously wanting to throw a gift away, but you can't because someone who loves you gave it to you and all you can do is leave it somewhere while it reminds you that you are shitty because you don't like it... Truth. The best gifts don't have to exist forever.

Make it a set — It's hard to find one really good gift that says enough, but a few small things together makes the gift an experience. Give them a little life detour.

Packaging is everything — Forget being "theme appropriate."  99% of gifts made specifically for holidays SUCK. Instead, indulge in a little arts and crafts and keep it sleek and simple (solid colours). Add a couple of little pine twigs (steal some from public decorations) to the bow!

Here's the

ultimate Easy gift guide

for perfect, fail-proof presents that don't say "here's some garbage. Can you through it away for me?"

1.   Block of Cheese

One of the best presents I have ever received was a block of cheese in a sparkly green bag. It was so simple and completely fantastic. I mean, it wasn't just your average everyday cheese. It was $25 worth of a 20 something year old block of Comté (the way better cousin of Gruyère which is the way better version of Swiss) . It was a gourmet indulgence, but it also didn't require anything else except for me to literally eat it and enjoy. Simple works. And I ate that entire block straight up in 3 days because it was delicious AF.

(The block I got as a present was 3 times bigger!)

2.   The Same, But Perfect

There are just somethings in life that we always need and use all the time. We lovingly use them so much they get destroyed. We try to replace them, but the best is when we find something even better.

I personally feel this way most strongly about my jeans. There's nothing I'll wear as much without washing as my 4 favourite pairs of jeans. 2 of them, not going to lie, I don't like that much—they're a couple things short of being perfect. But man, if they were... My top 2 favourite jeans, of course, I made and I tried for perfection. And if I may, I'd like to recommend them to you and your loved ones.

3.   Senz Umbrella

Speaking of perfect... Have you ever used something and felt like it's just necessary in everyone's life? The holiday season is exactly the time to share your expertise. You don't have to worry about getting the best gift for someone, because the gift is the best! Here's mine to you.

Fantastic, long-lasting warranty (one time I closed the door on my umbrella accidentally and they gave me a new one). But the thing about this particular umbrella is that it's been engineered by people who experience absolutely shit weather all year long. The result? A seriously storm proof umbrella that will last you... idk, I've had mine for 5 years now? We don't treat ourselves often enough to a really good version of daily necessities.

4.   Toilet Light

Some of the best gifts are silly and unexpected. This is definitely something most people don't already have and wouldn't commit to getting it for themselves. But it's kind of sweet... And there's no hassle or downside. The best thing about this is, late at night, when you stumble into your bathroom drunk , you no longer have to turn on the BLINDING white fluorescent lights. It's light and motion sensitive and you can set it to whatever colour you want.

Light up your throne!

5.   Condoms & Matches

A supply of necessities is, well, necessary. I'd be pretty OK honestly if someone gave me a month's supply of cleaning products and trash bags if there was a way to make that fun, but there isn't, really. Condoms and matches, however, were made for the fun parts of life. If they're also stylish, even better! Upgrade the way you entertain your guest(s).

6.   Socks

Always disappearing somehow and the holiday season is when you need them most! Similarly with the condoms and matches, necessities are always great. These socks from Ace & Everett are just the best I've ever worn. Truly high quality. Very stretchy, but with excellent bounce back. And because they're so special, somehow you just don't lose them. Maybe it's because they don't get lost in the mix?

7.   Ugg Robe

Robes... something a lot of people don't necessarily get for themselves. But once you experience robe life... there's no going back.

This is definitely for someone special like your mom. It would also make a nice gift for a couple (they can share, whatever). It's great for when it's too cold in your room. It's great for when you don't feel like wearing pants. It's great for when you need to answer the door because your food delivery has arrived. And it's just great to lounge in. Ugg, for sure, has the best robes. They're thick and so luxurious. It's like wearing a cloak of pure satisfaction.

8.   Nice Candle + Tea + Honey + Tiger Balm

The holidays can be hectic even though it's the one true vacation as anyone who works understands. So give someone who needs to chill out a relaxation kit. Telling someone to relax has never worked in the history of mankind. But give someone the tools to do so...

9.   The Care Kit

There's R&R and there's also upkeep so that the things we love stay the way we want. The winter weather can be destructive, especially to those that we use to trudge through the snow—our shoes. Leather, especially, will crack and crumble. And once that happens, there's no going back. The secret to preserving your leather shoes is to moisturize and hydrate them. Timberland has a great little kit that always makes everyone say "that's exactly what I needed!"

10.   A Reminder that whoever it is... is fantastic!

Gift giving is just a gesture of care towards someone else. This time of the year is a celebration of that. Anything that is given should always come with a message, because at the end of the day, sentiment is the most important thing. If you wanted to find something that truly speaks to the personal relationship you have with someone else, you wouldn't be reading this. All suggestions above are a bit of a blanket, but they are also a starting point to say "I wish you well" in some form or another.

The best (or maybe worst) present that I've ever given was to my old sister who, you know, I've literally known for my entire life. This past year, for the first time, I literally couldn't think of anything that was quite right and I didn't want to give her a throwaway gift. So I made her a really, really beautiful box from scratch. But it was empty apart from a note that read:

You already have a lot of shit. All I want is for you to feel special.

p.s. maybe don’t Instagram this box too much. You can re-use it.

happy holidays!!
